The Best Tools to Optimize for ChatGPT Search

Key takeaways

  • Check what you already pay for first. Semrush includes AI visibility tracking on every plan, from $117.33/month billed annually. Ahrefs includes Brand Radar on all main plans, from $129/month with 5 tracked prompts. A lot of teams buy a second tool to do a job their existing subscription already does.
  • Otterly.AI, $29/month is the cheapest standalone answer to "does ChatGPT mention us". Fifteen prompts across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot.
  • Profound, $99/month tracks ChatGPT only with 50 prompts. Its $399 plan covers three engines. Depth for people who report to someone.
  • Surfer, $49/month is the pick when pages need fixing rather than counting. At $99 it bundles 25 AI prompts, so one subscription does both jobs.
  • Clearscope, $129/month puts 50 tracked prompts and 50 pages on one bill, and grades harder than anything else here.
  • Read one line of your robots.txt before spending anything. OAI-SearchBot is what puts you in ChatGPT's answers. GPTBot is training data. Blocking GPTBot does not remove you from ChatGPT search, whatever you have read elsewhere.
  • Satiara, from $87/month, ours, writes and publishes the pages that change the score, which is the half of this that tracking cannot do. It does not measure, so pair it with Otterly at $29 if you want both.
  • No tool on this page can make ChatGPT cite you. They measure an outcome and suggest edits. The citation decision is still the page.

The free check to run first

OpenAI runs four crawlers and they do different jobs. Confusing them is the most expensive mistake in this category, because it is the one that quietly removes you from the answers you are about to pay someone to measure.

From OpenAI's own documentation: OAI-SearchBot is "used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features". GPTBot is "used to crawl content that may be used in training our generative AI foundation models". ChatGPT-User fetches a page when someone asks ChatGPT to go and look at it. OAI-AdsBot checks landing pages submitted as ads.

Two things follow, and they point in opposite directions.

If you blocked GPTBot back in 2024 to keep your writing out of model training, that was a reasonable call and it cost you nothing in visibility. Training and search are separate agents with separate rules. Your pages can still be quoted in ChatGPT answers.

If you blocked OAI-SearchBot, you are invisible in ChatGPT search and no product on this page will change that. Plenty of site owners blocked every OpenAI agent in one sweep. That is how a company ends up paying $189 a month to watch a number sit at zero. Open your robots.txt first.

You may already be paying for this

The AI visibility category grew fast enough that the established SEO platforms folded it in while everyone was busy comparing the new arrivals. Check your current bill before you add to it.

Semrush includes AI visibility tracking across Google Search, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini on every plan, with no separate fee. Plans run $117.33 for SEO, $165.17 for Starter, $248.17 for Pro+ and $455.67 for Advanced, billed annually. Daily prompt allowances go 50 on Starter, 100 on Pro+, 200 on Advanced.

Ahrefs includes Brand Radar on all main plans. Lite is $129 with 5 tracked AI prompts, Standard $249 with 10, Advanced $449 with 20, Enterprise $1,499 with negotiated limits. Larger prompt volumes are add-on packs at $50, $100 and $250 a month, and there is a standalone Brand Radar AI product from $199.

The difference between them matters. Semrush hands an Advanced subscriber 200 prompts a day. Ahrefs hands an Advanced subscriber 20. If tracking breadth is the point, those are not comparable products at comparable prices, and the platform you happen to already use decides how much extra you need to spend.

Dedicated trackers

These do one job. You give them prompts a buyer might type, they run those prompts on a schedule, and they record whether your brand appears, who appears instead, and which pages the model cited.

Otterly.AI, from $29/month

Fifteen prompts on Lite, refreshed daily, across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. Every tier includes unlimited team members. Standard is $189 for 100 prompts, Premium $489 for 400, Enterprise from $1,000. Paying annually takes 15% off, which puts Lite at $25.

Fifteen prompts sounds thin until you write them down. Most businesses have four or five questions that really precede a purchase. This is the only tool here where finding out costs less than a team lunch.

The catch on the cheap tier: Gemini, Google AI Mode and Claude are paid add-ons rather than included.

Profound, from $99/month

Starter tracks ChatGPT and nothing else, with 50 prompts and 100 agent credits a month. Growth at $399 covers three answer engines with 100 prompts. Enterprise reaches nine engines and adds SSO and SOC 2.

Profound is built for people who present to someone else. If your month includes a slide about brand visibility, the depth earns the money. If you are one person wondering whether you show up at all, $99 buys a more detailed answer to the question Otterly answers for $29.

Surfer AI Search Analytics, $158/month standalone

One hundred prompts, daily, across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google and Gemini. It is on this list mainly so you do not buy it by accident. Surfer's $99 content plan already includes 25 prompts and the $182 plan includes 50 on daily refresh, alongside everything Surfer does to pages.

Tools that change what ChatGPT finds

Tracking reports the score. It does not move it. Moving it means changing pages so a model can lift a clean, attributable answer straight out of them.

Surfer, from $49/month

Discovery at $49 covers 120 documents and 10 tracked pages. Standard at $99 raises that to 360 documents and folds in 25 AI prompts. Pro at $182 adds 50 prompts on daily refresh, one-click internal linking, a cannibalisation report and five brand workspaces.

The $99 tier is why Surfer keeps turning up on lists like this. It is the cheapest point at which one subscription both measures AI visibility and edits the pages that drive it.

Clearscope, from $129/month

Essentials covers 50 tracked prompts and 50 pages, with 20 topic explorations and 20 drafts a month. Business is $399 for 300 prompts and 300 pages. Extra pages run $25 each on Essentials, $15 on Business.

Clearscope puts tracking and content grading on one bill, which makes it the tidiest single purchase here. It also grades harder than anything else on this page. Teams find that either clarifying or infuriating.

Satiara, from $87/month, which is us

Declaring the bias: you are reading this on Satiara's blog. Placing it honestly means being clear about which half of this page it belongs to, and why that half is the one the question is really about.

Nothing in the tracking half changes whether ChatGPT cites you. Otterly and Profound report a score. What moves the score is a page a model can lift a clean answer out of, and somebody has to write that page.

Satiara does that end to end without anyone opening an editor. It reads the business, picks topics from your Search Console data, writes in your site's own voice, links the pages to each other, publishes to your CMS, and rewrites a page when it starts slipping. Starter is $87 for one site and 4 articles a month, Growth $237 for 2 sites and 12, Scale $447 for 3 sites and 25, Pro $597 for 10 sites and 40. Every plan is the whole product; the tiers change only how much you publish. A $7 trial runs seven days with a cap of 2 articles.

What it does not do is measure. Satiara will not tell you whether ChatGPT mentions you, and no plan adds that. Both jobs covered is Satiara from $87 alongside Otterly at $29, so $116 a month.

The case against us: 4 articles a month on Starter is a hard ceiling, and if you already have somebody writing well, Surfer at $99 sharpens what they produce for a third less than our Growth plan.

What the editing actually involves

No tool does this part, so it is worth being concrete about what the score nudges you toward. Answer the question in the first two sentences under the heading that asks it. Keep a claim and its number in the same sentence, because a model quoting you lifts a sentence and not a paragraph. Attribute figures to a named source in the text, not only inside a link. Give each question its own heading instead of burying three answers in one section.

These are the habits that make a page easy to skim. Not a coincidence.

Which one to buy first

You already pay for Semrush. Buy nothing. Turn on the AI visibility tracking you own and spend the afternoon writing better prompts instead.

You already pay for Ahrefs. Five prompts on Lite is a sample, not a measurement. Use it to see whether you appear at all, then decide between an Ahrefs prompt pack at $50 and Otterly at $29.

You pay for neither and have never measured this. Otterly Lite, $29. Write fifteen prompts a customer would really type, wait a fortnight, see whether your name shows up. You may find you are already cited and need nothing else this quarter.

You know you are invisible and the pages need work. Surfer Standard, $99. One subscription, both jobs, and 25 prompts is enough to tell whether your edits moved anything.

You run client sites. Clearscope Business at $399 gives 300 pages and 300 prompts on one bill, with extra pages at $15. That arithmetic beats stacking per-client subscriptions somewhere around the tenth client.

Nobody is going to write the pages. This is the case for Satiara, ours, from $87. Every tracker on this page ends by handing you a list. If there is no one to hand it to, you have bought a report about a problem instead of a fix. Add Otterly at $29 for the measurement we do not do, and the pair is $116.

What none of them do

They do not make ChatGPT cite you. Each product measures an outcome and suggests edits. The citation decision belongs to a model reading your page against everybody else's, and no dashboard has a lever on it.

They only measure prompts you chose. Pick the wrong fifteen and you get a confident number about a question nobody asks. An afternoon spent on the prompt list will matter more than which tool you bought.

They cannot see volume. Search Console tells you how many people searched. Nothing equivalent exists for ChatGPT, so a tracker reports presence and share of voice, never traffic. Read the number as a direction, not a forecast.

And the trackers do not write anything. Surfer, Clearscope and Frase will draft, and Satiara will draft and publish, but somebody still decides which page to write and whether the result is true. That decision is the actual job, and it is where the fortnight goes.

Questions

Does blocking GPTBot hurt my ChatGPT visibility?

No. GPTBot gathers training data. OAI-SearchBot is the agent behind ChatGPT's search answers and follows its own robots.txt rule. Block one, allow the other.

Is $29 a month really enough?

To find out whether you appear, yes. Fifteen prompts covers the questions that come before most purchases. You outgrow it when you need to compare segments, languages or markets, and the next tier up is $189, so the jump is real.

Do I need a separate AI tool if I already pay for Surfer, Semrush or Ahrefs?

Usually not. Semrush includes AI visibility on every plan. Ahrefs includes Brand Radar on every main plan, though only 5 prompts at $129. Surfer includes 25 prompts at $99 and 50 at $182. Check what you own before adding a bill.

How long before anything changes?

Model answers move when the pages behind them move, and re-crawling is not instant. Give an edit four to six weeks before judging it. Change one thing at a time, or you will not know which edit did the work.
